Study notes - Chapter 4 - The Deity of the Holy Spirit
In the last two studies, I have attempted to define the words “holy” and “spirit” in some detail. If we’re going to use these words to describe God’s Spirit, then let’s understand what they mean. Essentially, the word “spirit” is used to describe an intangible force (egs), and the word “holy” is used in the Scriptures to describe something that is set apart, and particularly separated from uncleanness and the things of the world, and separated unto God. God’s Holy Spirit is separated from other spirits, and things which are called spirit, and is closely identified with God Himself.
In this chapter, we shall consider this aspect more – the deity or “Godness” of the Holy Spirit.
--------
Omnipresence
Ps 139:7-12 (v.7 – Hebrew parallel thoughts – spirit/presence)
Omniscience
of the same One, it is said … Ps 139:1-6
READ 1 Cor 2:10,11
Omnipotence
Ps 139:13-15 – creation Linked with [READ] Gen 1:2 – creation, where God’s Spirit was present
Job 26:13 only … then READ v.7-14 – His mighty works – linked with God’s Spirit.
At this point we should READ Isaiah 40:13
THEN read vv.12-17 and tie a few of these thoughts together
(v.10 – The LORD God; v.13 Spirit of the LORD – Hebrew parallel thoughts)
The Spirit’s omnipresence, omnipotence and omniscience are all inferred in those verses.
v.10 -12 – omnipotence // v.13,14 knowledge // v.15-17 omnipresence + omnipotence
(some overlap between these)
Equated with God – some other passages
Isaiah 63:10 “vexed His Holy Spirit” [i.e. in the wilderness]
– cp Psalm 78 – v.40 (context “God” v.34,35), v.41 “God”, “Holy One of Israel”; v.56 – “Most High God”
Ps 95:6-10 – LORD, Maker, God … (all these names linked with the Spirit)
v. 9 – when your fathers tested Me, v.10 “grieved”
a “Oneness” present, but distinctions between each manifestation. A lot of overlapping, in terms of deity. Another example of this is …
Isaiah 48:16 – The LORD God and His Spirit has [Hebrew = singular, not plural] sent me.
READ Acts 5:1-11
v.3 – Holy Spirit … v.4 same situation – “God”
(they lied to the apostles who were filled with the Holy Spirit – cp. Matt 16:18,19 …. whatever you bind on earth, shall be bound in heaven; Whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven – i.e. whatever you permit, forgive, condemn – you have that authority and the power to carry it out.)
1 Cor 3:16 – two different phrases, parallel thoughts –“Spirit of God” / “God”
(v.17 about destruction is related to the preceding verses, eg v12,13a – not our subject)
1 Cor 12:4-6 – same principles being stated (Hebraism – three different ways of stating the same thing)
IF TIME …
2 Cor 3:15-18 – the Lord is the Spirit
“Lord” in the NT - not always clear who exactly is being spoken of.
sometimes refers to Christ (2 Cor 4:5), sometimes to Jehovah from OT times (2 Cor 6:16-18), sometimes as a general title of God (as in v.4 “through Christ towards God”).
“Lord” in the NT certainly equates to at least one of the manifestations of God, and can rightly be called “God”.
Back to 3:17 “the Lord is the Spirit”
Concluding Remarks
The Holy Spirit can be seen to be equated with God in many passages – omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent – both OT and NT, and we’ll continue looking at some related aspects and questions in the next study.
